Small Robin Press firmly believes in the power of people creating art in all forms. We exclusively use human-created work in our books, our cover art, and our communications. If you receive any sort of communication from us, you can be confident that a human created it.
We also recognize that the world of AI is nuanced and fluid. Our AI Policy supports our mission to publish human-created art; we acknowledge that this policy, like AI tools, will likely evolve over time.
DEFINITIONS
- “Generative AI” includes any machine-based tool designed to consider user questions, prompts, and other inputs (e.g., text, images, videos, voice) to generate a human-like output (e.g., a response to a question, a written document, software code, or a product design). Generative AI includes both standalone offerings such as ChatGPT, Bard, Stable Diffusion, and offerings that are embedded in other software, such as Github’s Copilot.
CONCERNS
- Generative AI outputs may contain or be trained on writing, art, or other works created by humans whose loss of that work damages artists financially, harms their ability to reach an audience, and removes their control of their own work;
- Generative AI outputs may violate the intellectual property rights and/or copyrights of authors or artists, and might not themselves be protected by intellectual property or copyright laws;
OUR STANCE
- Generative AI may not be used to draft or create a manuscript or essay that is submitted for consideration to Small Robin Press.
- Generative AI may be used to create short blurbs or descriptions of submitted work, where such writing is requested or required. Generative AI may also be used to draft an author bio, although the final submission should be rewritten in the author’s voice before adopting the bio.
- AI-assist tools such as speech-to-text and language translators that authors use to help capture their voices are not prohibited by Small Robin Press. We recognize the very real benefits for disabled and neurodiverse writers—as well as other writers—to access these tools.
- Any use of generative AI tools (outside of #2 and #3) must be expressly identified in any work submitted to Small Robin Press. This declaration must be in the original document submitted.
- Work that violates our AI Policy will be disqualified from all current and future submissions.
